Dining Table Size Guide: How Many Seats Fit Your Room
The right dining table size comes down to two numbers: how many people you seat on a normal night, and how much room the table leaves to walk around it. This guide gives the rules of thumb for round, square, rectangular and extendable tables, then points you to the solid wood dining tables at Sideboards and Things that fit each size.
How much table does each person need?
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per diner, and 28 to 30 inches if you want elbow room or use armchairs. Leave 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so chairs can pull out, and 42 to 48 inches on any side people walk past during a meal. Standard dining height is 28 to 30 inches; a counter-height table sits at 34 to 36 inches.
Dining table size chart
| Shape | Size | Seats comfortably | Minimum room size (with 36 in. clearance) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | 36 to 44 in. | 4 | 9 x 9 ft |
| Round | 48 in. | 4 to 5 | 10 x 10 ft |
| Round | 54 to 60 in. | 6 | 11 x 11 ft |
| Round | 72 in. | 8 | 12 x 12 ft |
| Square | 48 to 54 in. | 4 to 8 (two per side) | 10 x 10 ft |
| Square | 60 x 60 in. | 8 | 11 x 11 ft |
| Rectangular | 60 to 72 in. | 6 | 9 x 12 ft |
| Rectangular | 84 to 96 in. | 8 | 10 x 14 ft |
| Rectangular | 108 to 120 in. | 10 to 12 | 11 x 16 ft |
Rectangular tables are usually 36 to 42 inches wide. Below 36 inches, serving dishes compete with place settings; above 44 inches, conversation across the table gets harder.
Round dining tables: 48, 55 and 60 inch
Round tables suit square rooms and keep everyone in one conversation. A 48 inch round is the practical limit for four with serving space; a 54 or 55 inch round seats six with room for platters; a 60 inch round seats six generously or eight for a holiday. Pedestal bases free up legroom, so a pedestal round can take one more chair than a four-leg table of the same diameter.
Square dining tables: 48 to 60 inch
A square table is the best use of a square breakfast room. A 48 to 54 inch square seats four with space to spare or eight with two chairs per side; a 60 x 60 inch square seats eight. Keep the corners in mind: a square table needs the same clearance on all four sides.
Rectangular and extendable tables: seating 6, 8, 10 or 12
A 72 inch rectangle seats six; 84 to 96 inches seats eight; 108 to 120 inches seats ten to twelve. If your room only fits a 72 inch table but you host for ten, choose an extendable table: a butterfly leaf folds and stores inside the table, so one person can open it; a removable leaf adds 18 to 24 inches per leaf and needs a closet for storage. Measure the room at the extended length before you buy.
